Education & Public Outreach

The goals of our E/PO program will include but are not limited to:

(a) Train a new generation of researchers comfortable and experienced in multidisciplinary interactions, at both the graduate student and postdoctoral levels. Our team already has substantial experience in this endeavour through microbial ecology and evolutionary programs funded by other agencies.

(b) Use our cross-cutting research style to meaningfully inform public debate about evolution and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.

(c) Improve the public understanding of the close connections between the processes of life and the response of the environment to change, using the Yellowstone National Park system as a dramatic example. Our team already has close connections with the Park’s interpretative and educational mission, reaching out to 3 million visitors per year.

(d) Create novel training opportunities for K-12 teachers and their students through the conceptual work done in our program, through summer courses emanating from our research, and through participation in field studies.
